DSHS DVR Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 3

Do you have a passion for assisting people with disabilities by providing vocational rehabilitation counseling and case management services to assist them in obtaining and maintaining employment? Join the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and our hard-working team of professionals. Motivated people engaged in providing vocational rehabilitation services to clients with disabilities are encouraged to apply. In cooperation with other agencies and service providers, you'll work with clients to complete comprehensive assessments and develop an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE) to achieve their employment goals.

Some of what you will do

  • You will learn to serve a caseload of DVR clients
  • Determine client eligibility for vocational rehabilitation services
  • Provide vocational rehabilitation counseling and support
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of client needs for vocational rehabilitation services
  • Obtain benefits analysis reports and interpret results to assist and counsel clients
  • Assist clients in developing and implementing an IPE and monitor progress toward completion of employment goals
  • Maintain close working relationships with a federal, state and local organizations; jointly serving clients
  • Promote DVR programs to the public and employers, and conduct outreach in the community to share information about DVR services
  • Lead group orientations, workshops, and related activities to facilitate informed choices and prepare clients for employment

What we are looking for

  • Professionals with in-depth knowledge of disabilities and the models of vocational rehabilitation service delivery that lead to successful employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities, including supported employment models
  • Commitment to the economic prosperity of individuals with disabilities who are seeking good-paying jobs and/or advancement in their careers
  • Demonstrated professional ability applying technical knowledge of medical and psychological aspects of disabling conditions, labor market information, transferable skills analysis, assistive technology, and job modifications
  • Strong ability to assist clients in exercising informed choices to make collaborative decisions that are consistent with appropriate vocational rehabilitation practice
  • Negotiate with vendors, and collaborate with other rehabilitation professionals
  • Work effectively with all types of people, especially those who are frustrated by their life circumstances
  • Emotional intelligence, assist in redirecting anger or frustration into positive communication and behavior
  • Desire to develop exceptional vocational rehabilitation counseling skills
  • Enthusiasm for a challenging profession that transforms individual lives
  • Experience working with people with disabilities.

Who should apply

  • Current Certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC)
  • Or, a Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, counseling, or a field related to vocational rehabilitation (such as one that promotes the physical, psychosocial, or vocational well-being of persons with disabilities)
  • Or, a Master's degree with at least 18 quarter or 12 semester credit hours of rehabilitation counseling courses, and 6 months paid/unpaid vocational counseling, job placement, vocational assessment or other areas of rehabilitation counseling experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling or reasonably related field, andaccepted or enrolled in a rehabilitation counseling or related master's program that will be completed within 2 years, and 1 year paid/unpaid experience consisting of:
  • Direct work with people with disabilities in a setting such as an independent living center;
  • Or, direct service or advocacy activities that provide you with experience and skills in working with persons with disabilities;
  • Or, direct experience as an employer, as a small business owner or operator, or in self-employment, or other experience in human resources, recruitment, or experience in supervising employees, training, or other activities that provide experience in competitive integrated employment environments.
