Welcome and Introduction

Created by James Maguire '58, founder of Philadelphia Insurance Company, the mission of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management is to promote and support the concept of risk management and insurance education; to provide services to risk management and insurance students, including scholarship aid, recruiting, internships/cooperative education, counseling and placement; and, with and through the University, to support the Department of Finance, which houses the risk management and insurance program.

The Executive Director provides strategic direction and execution of related plan to ensure the continued excellence of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management as one of the top programs of its kind in the country. The incumbent reports to the Dean of the HSB and works with the Academy Board and Board Chair, University Leadership, the Finance Department Chair, faculty and staff in meeting the current and future needs of MAIRM.

Position Summary or Faculty Qualifications

Provides leadership initiative and creativity within the college and serves as a primary point of contact and liaison for the Dean, for faculty and staff, MAIRM and its sub committees and the students. The Executive Director manages the IRM recruiting activities for incoming HSB students interested in the IRM program; coordinates the MAIRM Scholarship program/committee (allocation of Scholarship funding from the MAIRM endowed scholarship); plans and coordinates seminars, symposia and executive education (with the HSB Center for Professional Development ), the MAIRM Continuing Education program (approved by the PA State Department of Insurance) ,the Distinguished Speakers program, the MAIRM Board of Governors meetings and the MAIRM sub committee meetings; and coordinates MAIRM fundraising activities. The Executive Director will be the liaison to the Career Services Department, the Co Operative Education Program, and the Alumni Office in regards to MAIRM initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Leads the Board of Governors of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management and its sub committees (Executive, Development, Curriculum, and Corporate Relations Committees). The 35-member board assists the MAIRM staff and department faculty, assures continuity of programming, increases awareness of the program in the insurance and risk management community, and provides advice, counsel and support to the faculty with respect to programs, curriculum and pedagogy. The Board also fundraises to endow scholarships, provides internships and career placement opportunities. The Executive Director organize all meetings of the BOG and its sub committees and will report at least twice annually to the BOG on the state of the Academy and provide financial reports, including the state of the endowments. Assist the BOG of the MAIRM in planning and assessment activities.
  • Increase support of the Maguire Academy through various fundraising initiatives (Executive of the Year Dinner, Diversity Scholarships Campaign, Digital Lab, Thought Leadership Center) with the MAIRM Development Committee and the Haub Major Gifts Officer (in coordination with the University Development Office) to attain the yearly fundraising goals of the Academy.
  • Responsibility, in conjunction with the Admissions Office, for the IRM student recruitment.
  • Coordinate the Scholarship program for IRM program. Work with faculty, The Dean's office and the Financial Aid Office in administering the MAIRM Scholarship program.
  • Liaison to the insurance and risk management community to gain support for MAIRM educational programs and other offerings.
  • Coordinate and oversee multiple budgets for the IRM program.
  • Work with faculty to ensure the success of the academic insurance program.
  • Promote the Maguire Academy brand to local and national industry groups through thought leadership, innovation and successful programming.
  • Manage relationships with industry employers and develop / enhance partnership with industry groups (RIMS, Spencer, CPCU, ISOP, etc.) and companies (PHLY, Chubb, Marsh, etc.
  • Teach one or more classes as required within MAIRM.
  • Ensure successful job placement opportunities for students via three pillars - Enrich Curriculum, Engage the Students, Enhance the Brand).

Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Gather data for the Board of Governors of the MAIRM
  • Develop understanding of AACSB Standards and Processes
  • Analyze data from surveys and other sources regarding IRM
  • Track the various IRM endowment budgets within the college. Be able to determine and apply solutions to ad-hoc issues that arise.
  • Address any issues that arise with faculty and staff regarding HSB & MAIRM in a diplomatic fashion.
  • Able to act as immediate contact for students, faculty, university and departmental issues related to the MAIRM programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
  • Must be able to spend considerable time in front of a computer
  • Some night and weekend hours
  • Travel required periodically (conferences and corporate visits)
  • On occasion, one may be required to transport materials.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and significant experience in a senior capacity in an insurance-related organization.
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in the Insurance industry
  • Insurance industry knowledge and experience
  • High proficiency with Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) essential
  • Experience with report preparation process
  • Respect for and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills; excellent planning, organization and project management skills; the ability to collaborate with diverse groups of people.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree preferred (MBA or Finance/Insurance related area)
  • Insurance industry designation (CPCU, CLU, etc)
  • Budget experience highly preferred
