The Network Architect provides leadership and guidance in network design,
systems management, solutions architecture and technical support services for
the College's highly complex inter/intranetwork including both local and wide
area data communications. Reporting to the Manager of Network Infrastructure,
the incumbent actively takes a leading role in the planning, design,
installation, monitoring and maintenance of network infrastructure systems,
inter/intranet, networking and data communications systems software, and
layered software products and utilities.
The incumbent, through continuous product research provides technical advice,
training, guidance and direction to administrative and academic clients. The
incumbent takes a leading role in critical and complex intra- and inter-
organizational projects requiring very high levels of co-ordination and an
extreme breadth of knowledge. Overall responsibility for the security,
efficiency, effectiveness, evaluation, utilization, modernization and
interoperability of clients, servers, networking, inter/intranet and data
communications resources is the prime function of this position. The incumbent
leads a team responsible for the ongoing operations of the networks across all
3 locations and is responsible for assigning tasks as required, providing
direction on standards and ensuring compliance.
Technical Team Leadership
* Incumbent leads the network infrastructure services team that analyzes,
plans, installs, customizes and maintains all micro computing, inter/
intranet, networking and data communications software and hardware.
* Maintains a detailed knowledge of operating and application systems,
Internet, networking and data communication system internal operations.
* Has an in depth understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, system
security, Wireless communications, IP Telephony and various technologies
critical to the continued operation of the College s Data/Voice
* Identifies and isolates software, hardware and networking (LAN, WAN, and
Internet) problems and failures and co-ordinates appropriate action.
* Performs in-depth technical analysis of networks and systems to determine
root causes of performance or security issues.
* Assesses the capabilities and deficiencies of emerging technologies with
regard to College Data/Voice Communication requirements. Tests, plans and
integrates technologies (Wireless, VoIP, QOS, Multicasting, etc) in
support of the College s Strategic Plan.
* Review requirements for activities within the Networking Area and assign
technicians work to complete these activities.
* Review results of completed tasks to ensure that they meet the quality
requirements and expectations of ITS.
Systems Tuning, Configuration and Deployment
* Communicates with the technical staff of a variety of hardware and
* Identifies and isolates issues with current or beta versions of the
operating environment and reports failures to the vendors.
* Liaises with vendors regarding technical issues for the purposes of
resolving both minor and critical failures with regard to vendor provided
* Co-ordinates the implementation of new software features and releases.
* Ensures the security, reliability and availability of the College s
Data/Voice services by: monitoring performance and capacity; tuning and
balancing system throughput; integrating redundant system components; and
maintaining adequate fail-over and recovery procedures.
* Acts as technical resource to Information Technology Services staff and
other College clients for the selection, acquisition and deployment of
hardware and software systems and technology.
* Responsible for identifying and aiding in the procurement of appropriate,
complex system components and software.
* Actively searches out new technology applications and evaluates their
suitability in meeting College requirements.
Client Support Escalation
* Acts as a third level technical resource to Information Technology
Services staff and other internal or external clients regarding
infrastructure and security requirements.Maintains a detailed knowledge
of a variety of networking and systems technologies used throughout the
College for the purpose of providing a very high level of non-routine
technical support to the department s staff as well as the College
* As a project leader or independently, the incumbent analyses, designs,
develops and integrates a variety of technological and security
applications to support both administrative and academic objectives of
* Consults with various levels of staff throughout the College to define
system requirements, determine feasibility of the system(s) and
alternatives to meet organizational demands.
* As required, provides essential training on various technologies
(Security, QOS, VoIP, Wireless, IOS, Switching, etc.) to all levels of
* Four (4) year degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related
* Certifications in Network design, security, and specific technologies.
Cisco Certified Networking Professional or higher (CCIE, CCDP).
* ITIL Fundamentals
* Minimum of eight (8) years:
o Extensive working experience with a wide variety of Cisco hardware,
IOS, CatOS, Windows (all versions), TCP/IP, SNMP, Web protocols,
security methods/protocols, WAN technologies, firewalls. Routing/
Switching techniques is essential.
o Highly developed analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills
are required to understand and determine solutions to complex
o Demonstrated planning, organizational, and project management
skills to effectively utilize both human and information technology
o Highly developed verbal and written skills to effectively
communicate with technical and non-technical staff and while
conducting presentations, meetings, and training.
o Tact, diplomacy and a client service orientation are needed to
obtain/impart all relevant information.
o Well developed interpersonal and leadership skills in order to work
effectively with a variety or staff, users and suppliers
