Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.


The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst supports the Customer Analytics team in providing geospatial analysis, using specialized skills in GIS software, and creating compelling visualizations that synthesize complex analysis used by Senior Management, the Minister’s Office, MTO and The Board to inform transit initiatives across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs geospatial and spatial analysis to determine opportunities to build GO and UP ridership and revenue

  • Creates compelling visuals and infographics, synthesizing and communicating complex analysis to an executive audience, including supporting the monthly Metrolinx Business Performance Review process

  • Supports development of target market segments, based on ridership habits, location and demographic characteristics

  • Conducts basic analysis, in addition to spatial analysis, quantifying the potential ridership and revenue impact of customer-centric business opportunities, such as, the introduction of new services, marketing campaigns, and business partnerships

  • Supports the team in creating customer acquisition, retention and loyalty frameworks

  • Participates in cross-divisional teams, supporting projects with GIS analysis, and preparing presentation materials

  • Develops business intelligence dashboards to support the organizational need for timely information

  • Supports improvement of data governance, data quality, and related policies

  • Supports Marketing and the Senior Management Team’s (SMT) decision-making by creating spatial, and other supporting analysis that identifies revenue and ridership growth, cost reduction, and efficiency opportunities

  • Works with Marketing teams to identify targeted opportunities to build ridership and revenue, support business decisions, and evaluate project impacts

  • Partners with Operations, Planning & Marketing with spatial analysis that identifies new service opportunities that generate incremental revenue and ridership with a positive return on investment (ROI), or drive efficiency across the network

  • Builds GIS data and capabilities, in partnership with PRESTO, I&IT, third parties, and Planning, to ensure assets are used to their full potential

  • Supports Metrolinx Business Performance Review analysis (presented monthly to the executive team) that identifies customer behaviours leading to increases or decreases in ridership and fare revenue

  • Delivers solutions in a format that is easily understood, answers the specific business question(s), and leads to logical next steps

  • Ensures that analytical best practices specific to privacy, data stewardship, data governance and data management are consistently being applied to the highest standard

  • Assists the Manager, Customer Analytics in identifying best practices and recommendations to help stakeholders address key business and marketing challenges

  • Supports development of materials communicating Metrolinx revenue and ridership forecasts (created by the Analytics team)

  • Advises other employees on topics related to the incumbent’s area of expertise, but does not guide employees in their day-to day activities

Location:  10 Bay Street, Toronto

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree in Geography, ArcGIS, Environmental Science, Statistics, or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent

  • Up to two (2) year of progressive experience working with ArcGIS, conducting spatial analysis

  • Working knowledge of SQL, Python or R, Power BI or Tableau, with distributed databases and complex data sets

  • Basic understanding of financial acumen to ensure that all customer-centric models result in ridership and revenue gains or improvements in efficiency

  • Working experience and application with customer segmentation, profiling and clustering

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and ArcGIS

  • Experience applying the CRISP-DM framework to solving problems and developing models
