Senior Credit Officer

Job Description

Overview

Reporting to the Group Head (DGM), the Sr Credit Officer I makes credit
recommendations and decisions on complex credit transactions primarily for
Commercial Real Estate Finance including Casino and Hotels both corporate
finance and non-recourse finance and across the Americas and under various
products and industry sectors.

The Credit Department maintains sound credit management activities liaising
where appropriate/necessary with various other departments including Risk
(RMDAD) and Legal (PDAD) to approve or disapprove and guide specific customer
transactions and credit ratings, and monitoring of portfolio coverage, in
accordance with regulatory requirements and SMBC approval authorities, policies
and procedures. This position is a technical expert without supervisory
responsibilities. Educates other analysts to ensure work product and decision
making.

Responsibilities

Ensures sound practices in the credit approval process across the organization.

Conduct required analysis of various credit risk elements for new and existing
transactions for corporate credits and structured finance in coordination with
Front Office and senior management including approval authorities.

Maintains communication with senior managers in Front Office to ensure credit
standards/policies are fully understood.

Manages research and analysis of client's financial performance, continuous
monitoring of events and strength of credit portfolio.

Closely monitors relevant market inducers as well as industry developments.

Participates in the preparation of monthly/quarterly reviews of borrowers,
sectors and products to track compliance and identify and raise any potential
credit concerns to appropriate business teams.

Participates in deal and credit approval process, ensures appropriate
communication with all relevant parties, and adherence to credit policies and
approval authorities.

Engages in restructuring and/or workout process to protect the Bank's assets
and maximize recovery.

Guides and supports business lines, product groups, examination function, legal
and risk management function on high level credit and risk related issues.

Prepares information for internal Bank meetings.

Monitor an assigned portfolio and promptly report on key events (i.e.
downgrades, event of default, dtc.) to management.

Undertake other related tasks and projects as required and assigned.

Qualifications

Strong knowledge and market practices in specialization of sector or industry.

Strong knowledge of credit and risk principles including corporate finance and
accounting.

Strong knowledge of bank products and credit structure across all lines of
business.

Strong understanding of SMBC's credit philosophy and risk appetite.

Solid knowledge of the Bank's structure, policies and procedures, regulatory
requirements.

Solid knowledge of the market and industry trends.

Solid financial modeling and analytical skills; detail oriented.

Solid organizational skills; ability to prioritize work and manage time
effectively.

Good communication skills.

7 to 10 years of specialized experience in Financial Services

Requires 5+yrs. Overall. Banking with specialty in Credit Formal Credit
training program a plus.

Required: BA / BS

Preferred: MA / MS / MBA

MBA

CFA or equivalent
