The opportunity
We are seeking a driven Sr. Safety Advisor to join our Keystone XL US Projects Team.


Reporting to the Keystone XL US Health & Safety Manager and working as a member of the Project Health & Safety Team, this position will provide support and guidance to the US KXL Project Team to help ensure that project safety requirements are understood and implemented. This will include interfacing with Contractors and leading a team of field safety inspectors who will support the implementation and monitoring of project safety requirements at project work sites. The ideal candidate has knowledge and experience in leading the implementation and continual improvement of construction Safety Programs for pipeline and facilities projects. Travel is estimated at 35 to 50%.


What you’ll do


  • Provide active Leadership to ensure Company and project policies, practices and procedures are followed with the additional focus of leveraging best practices across the KXL Project
  • Regularly collaborate with Project Team members based throughout the US
  • Participate in contractor and inspection on-boarding to ensure alignment and commitment to a culture of safety excellence
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing of project safety professionals for successful project execution
  • Provide direction and support to a team of Health and Safety Inspectors
  • Maintain professional communications with the Prime Contractor’s safety professional(s)
  • Review and assist with project proposals, contractor selection, and contractor health & safety plans to ensure that project health & safety requirements are effectively communicated and implemented
  • Regularly travel to project worksites to participate in site safety meetings
  • Maintain high standards of documentation, record keeping and timely reporting
  • Continually monitor, trend and analyze safety performance data or systemic issues that may require follow-up
  • Support reporting on weekly and monthly summary reports to the Project Safety Manager
  • Support, and when requested lead, initiatives aimed at improving the safety culture within the Project Team
  • Management and Audit Review of Incident Investigations and associated construction worksite trends
  • Identifying, advising and influence on the mitigation of the safety risks associated with construction and installation of facilities, processes, equipment and materials
  • Advocate on safety issues and recommends strategies to improve the overall safety culture
  • Respond to incidents whenever necessary and ensure that incident RCAs are completed in a timely fashion
  • Work closely with the Project Health & Safety Team to ensure the Project’s reporting processes are aligned and executed
  • Ensure that Site Safety Inspectors are made aware of any requests for information from contractors or the Project Team for their site
  • Support the Project Health & Safety Team to ensure all Near Hits and Incidents are entered the EHSM system and classified in accordance with TransCanada’s Incident Management Classification Guide
  • Other tasks as required


Minimum Qualifications


  • Ability to work independently within a team environment
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to solve problems and multi-task
  • Significant experience with OSHA requirements related to construction, prime contractor management and occupational health is preferred
  • Strong computer skills
  • Proven team player with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships
  • Post-secondary degree in a safety related discipline
  • 6 + years of combined applicable academic training, certification and related experience in safety management systems and general project experience with high level of familiarity of construction safety management principles and methods
  • Training in the areas of inspections, investigations and audits
  • Strong technical expertise in the area of safety including process safety (hazard identification, incident investigations, emergency preparedness and response, safety management systems)
  • High level of analytical ability and strategic thinking required to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources and to formulate recommendations
  • The ability to lead and mentor others
  • Ability to make decisions where only general policies and procedures are available requiring application of judgment and independent action
  • Leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills
    • This position may require travel across borders and as such the candidate must be able to provide applicable documentation to this effect.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Completion of a 4-year OHS related University program
  • Certification or accreditation in a safety discipline (CSP, CHST, SMS, etc.) or recognized equivalent
  • Experience in the construction of cross-country oil and gas infrastructure would be an asset
